Manfred von Ardenne is probably the most influencial figure in the history of hyperthermia and according to his critics :a man of extraordinary mind, usually moving a step ahead of world hyperthermia, who easily changed concepts and technical solutions if they were ineffective, and his physical and technical knowledge were absolutely superior all over the world, thinking and acting 25-30 years ahead of his time.”

Founders of German Society of Hyperthermia (DGHT eV), with over *250 installations in more than 20 countries* and an impressive record of over *180,000 official hyperthermia treatments* performed with Von Ardenne Iratherm 1000 hyperthermia equipment, our experience and reliability are proven.

We’re proud to confirm that all our devices meet the strictest safety and quality standards, holding the necessaryISO 13485,CE and MDR (Medical Device Regulation) certifications, ensuring their excellence and reliability.

The IRATHERM® 1000 WBH device is designed to offer an effective, and safe therapeutic approach, significantly improving the outcomes of integrative oncological therapies. Operating the IRATHERM® 1000 wIRA hyperthermia device requires specialized and trained medical personnel, and treatment is always individualized based on a thorough medical evaluation of each patient, ensuring the safety and professionalism of each procedure.

Pure wIRA Technology - The Heart of IRATHERM 1000 for Profound Biological Effects

Pure wIRA Radiation: The IRATHERM 1000 Difference in Hyperthermic Therapy

What fundamentally distinguishes the von Ardenne IRATHERM 1000 in the hyperthermia device market is its EXCLUSIVE use of wIRA radiation (water-filtered infrared-A). Unlike other hyperthermia devices and methods that may include infrared B and C spectra (IRB/IRC – which are primarily absorbed at the skin surface and cannot reach the necessary therapeutic temperatures in depth without causing burnswIRA radiation penetrates Deeply into tissues without overheating the skin surface.

The water filtration of infrared-A radiation mimics the part of the solar spectrum that is best tolerated by the skin and penetrates tissues most efficiently, eliminating unwanted radiation that would cause superficial overheating(IRB & IRC). This ensures an efficient and comfortable transfer of thermal energy, rapidly heating the body-core (i.e.39°C in about 45 minutes)

von Ardenne Iratherm 10000 WBH wIRA hyperthermia-device-wIRA

Von Ardenne IRATHERM whole-body wIRA hyperthermia devices exclusively use wIRA radiation. These properties make the IRATHERM® 1000 ideal for inducing and maintaining gentle total body hyperthermia (i.e. over 39°C), a fever like temperature , ideal for immune system stimulation.

This unique technology guarantees precise and safe therapeutic hyperthermia, facilitating the desired biological responses.

Using water-filtered infrared-A radiation the IRATHERM 1000 allows a much higher irradiation level than that of commercial infrared or halogen lamps at same skin tolerance.

Comparative Advantages and Unique Innovations

IRATHERM® 1000: Superior Precision, Power, and Efficiency in Whole-Body Hyperthermia

The design and engineering behind the IRATHERM® 1000 set new standards for whole body hyperthermia devices, offering significant advantages compared to other WBH wIRA devices available on the market, designed for maximum clinical performance:

Advanced Power Supply System (380V Three-Phase) for Constant Power

The IRATHERM 1000 WBH device utilizes a robust and advanced power supply system, requiring a connection to *380V three-phase current*. This technical requirement underscores the device’s exceptional power and stability, ensuring consistent and optimal performance throughout each whole body hyperthermia session. Von Ardenne Iratherm 1000 hyperthermia devices offer higher power compared to competing systems. This indicates its ability to handle high energy loads, which is crucial for precise and effective therapeutic results.

Rapid Attainment of "Core Body Temperature" and Uniform Distribution

Thanks to its advanced system with 6 high-performance wIRA lamps, the IRATHERM 1000 can reach the target internal temperature (“core body temperature”) faster compared to other wIRA hyperthermia devices. Von Ardenne IRATHERM whole-body wIRA hyperthermia devices use 6 wIRA lamps , more than competitors. This superior configuration  ensures optimal heat coverage and remarkably uniform heat distribution across the patient’s entire body, optimizing the effectiveness of each whole-body hyperthermia session and contributing to systemic immune system activation.

Precise Power Control on Each Lamp – Personalized Therapy

A distinctive advantage of the IRATHERM 1000 WBH wIRA hyperthermia device is the ability to individually regulate the radiation power for each of its 6 lamps. This advanced functionality allows for fine-tuning of the treatment, precisely adjusting the heat intensity for each body part, depending on the patient’s specific needs and the peculiarities of the oncological case. This personalized hyperthermia maximizes effectiveness and comfort, offering unique therapeutic flexibility.

Durable Lamps with Continuous Water Cooling System

The system’s longevity and fiability are guaranteed by the unique continuous water cooling technology for the lamps. Thanks to the water flushing system for the 6 wIRA lamps, they practically never need replacement, unlike lamps used by some competitors, which require periodic replacement. This innovation significantly extends the lamps’ lifespan and maintains consistent performance during each WBH session, a crucial aspect for hyperthermia treatment efficacy and reliability.

Dorsal Irradiation for Maximum Absorption and Full Body Coverage

The innovative design of the IRATHERM® 1000 wIRA hyperthermia system enables predominant irradiation through the back (dorsally). This approach maximizes the effective absorption of thermal energy directly through the muscle mass, ensuring deeper and more efficient penetration compared to frontal irradiation. Von Ardenne IRATHERM devices irradiate the patient’s back (muscles), so that wIRA radiation is not hindered by abdominal fat, as is the case with other devices.

Moreover, wIRA radiation is applied to the entire body, not just the chest, as with other systems. The IRATHERM® 1000 ensures whole-body heating, an essential prerequisite for the full benefits of whole-body hyperthermia, including full systemic immune activation.

iratherm-1000_WBH wIRA hyperthermia device non claustrophobic

Non-Claustrophobic Patient Experience and Therapeutic Flexibility

The IRATHERM® 1000 hyperthermia device stands out with an open design, free from “cage” elements or enclosed spaces. This modern concept eliminates any feeling of claustrophobia, contributing significantly to patient comfort and relaxation.

Von Ardenne IRATHERM hyperthermia devices also allow for a non-claustrophobic design for the patient, which additionally enables the simultaneous administration of infusions (chemotherapy or other substances).

Furthermore, the patient’s sweat is collected and does not remain inside the “cage,” contributing to a more hygienic treatment environment compared to other devices. This functionality is crucial for integrative treatment protocols and patient comfort, offering a practical advantage in the context of complex oncological treatments.

Advanced Monitoring and Ability to Achieve Higher Temperatures

The IRATHERM® 1000 WBH system is equipped with an integrated computer and sensors for monitoring vital functions, similar to the highest industry standards. These advanced systems guarantee safety and precision throughout the entire hyperthermia session. Thanks to its superior technology, the von Ardenne IRATHERM® 1000 WBH wIRA hyperthermia device can achieve higher therapeutic temperatures and maintain them more efficiently compared to other devices, allowing for a deeper and more effective approach to heat therapy at a systemic level, optimizing conditions for biological and immunological effects.

The Role of IRATHERM® 1000 in Integrative Oncological Therapy and Immunological Mechanisms

Therapeutic Impact of Mild Whole-Body Hyperthermia (fever range) with IRATHERM® 1000

Hyperthermia therapy using the IRATHERM® 1000 provides fundamental, scientifically proven benefits in the approach to cancer treatment. The gentle and deep heat generated by wIRA radiation acts synergistically and safely[7] with conventional oncological therapies, amplifying their effectiveness and activating the body’s immune system:

  • Amplification of Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy: Fever Range Whole Body Hyperthermia improves tumor perfusion and oxygenation, allowing chemotherapeutic agents and radiation to act more effectively on cancer cells.[1]
  • Stimulation of Immune Response (Detailed): Exposure to heat, at the specific temperatures targeted by IRATHERM® 1000, induces a strong anti-tumor immune response.
    • Heat Shock Proteins (HSPs): The heat generated by IRATHERM® 1000 stimulates the synthesis of heat shock proteins, especially HSP70. These enter the surfaces of cancer cells and mark them for greatly enhanced attack by *cytotoxic T cells* of the body’s immune system as a result of WBH heat stimulation [1][2].
    • T-Lymphocyte Increase : Fever-range hyperthermia can significantly increase in the population of cytotoxic T-lymphocytes (CD3+/CD8+ T cells) in the spleen (a 3-fold increase) ,thus enhance the anti-tumor immune attack.[2]
    • Activation of Immune Cells:* The 39-43°C temperature range fosters the activity of key immune cells, such as *cytotoxic T cells, helper T cells, dendritic cells, macrophages, natural killer cells, and NK-like T cells, while compromising immunosuppressive cells [1][2][3].
    • Optimization of the Tumor Microenvironment:* Mild hyperthermia improves local blood flow and oxygen supply, reversing tumor hypoxia. This is crucial, as hypoxia is also a key factor impairing anti-tumor immunity [1].
    • Aims to induce systemic effects by modulating the whole immune system.[3] This includes:
      * Increasing the population of innate immune cells (like NK cells, NKT cells, and \gamma\delta-T cells)[3].
      * Stimulating the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines throughout the body.[3]
      * Enhancing the peripheral T-cell (lymphocyte) response, which is crucial for fighting cancer cells systemically (as confirmed by previous studies showing the increase in CD8+ T cells).[3]
      * WBH acts as a systemic weapon, activating and mobilizing the body’s entire defense mechanism[3].
  • Clinical Evidence of Immune Response: Clinical studies support these mechanisms:
    • Pancreatic Cancer – Phase I-II clincal trial by Dr. Joan M. Bull (2008) showed that nearly half of therapy-resistant cancer patients treated with moderate WBH plus conventional chemotherapy experienced at least 50% tumor regression [4].
    • More recently, at the 13th International Congress of Hyperthermic Oncology (ICHO) 2021, Dr. Bettina Weigelin presented significant results on the effects of WBH on cytotoxic T-lymphocytes [5].
    • Breast Cancer (Recurrence): WHT combined with re-irradiation or radiotherapy has shown effectiveness for locally advanced breast cancer and chest wall recurrence, confirmed by randomized data [11, 12].
    • Ovarian Cancer: WBH combined with carboplatin was investigated in a Phase II study for reccurent ovarian cancer [13, 14].
    • Colorectal Cancer: WBH wIRA was used in the context of Von Ardenne’s Systemic Cancer Multistep Therapy (sCMT) combined with chemotherapy in a Phase I/II study [15].
    • Dr Kleef et. all performed a retrospective case series investigating a highly complex, multimodal treatment protocol for advanced (Stage IV) cancer patients. The study’s conclusion, concerning the role of Hyperthermia (which included Whole-Body Hyperthermia) in the regimen (Ipilimumab, Nivolumab, IL-2, and Hyperthermia), is that Whole Body Hyperthermia was an integral and essential component that contributed to maximizing the anti-tumor immune response driven by the checkpoint inhibitors.
      • Favorable Responses: The study reported that the combination therapy achieved unusually high favorable clinical response rates (including partial and complete responses) for patients with advanced disease.
      • WBH’s Role in Synergy: The authors conclude that Hyperthermia (WBH in the fever range) is critical because it creates a powerful synergy with the immunotherapies:
        1. HSP70 Induction: WBH induces cellular stress, leading to the expression of Heat Shock Protein 70 (HSP70) on the surface of tumor cells.
        2. Immune Mobilization: This expression of HSP70, along with the release of tumor antigens, actively drives the activation of antigen-presenting cells, which then mobilize and prime the Cytotoxic T-Lymphocytes (CTLs/CD8+ T cells).
        3. Checkpoint Inhibition Release: The checkpoint inhibitors (Nivolumab/Ipilimumab) then remove the “brake” from these already activated and mobilized T cells, allowing them to effectively target and destroy the tumor.

In summary: The study supports the principle that WBH acts as a systemic immunomodulator that primes the immune system for a much stronger and more effective response when combined with modern immunotherapy.

  • • Improvement of Quality of Life:

Patients may experience significant pain relief and a general improvement in well-being, as observed in Dr. Bull’s research [4] and notably in the recent Phase III clinical study by Dr. Sahinbas et al. [6]

In 2024, Sahinbas and colleagues published a Phase III study regarding bone metastases pain (primarily from breast and prostate cancer) using WBH wIRA Iratherm hyperthermia devices in addition to Radiotherapy (RT) [2].

The study found that the RT-only group experienced the most intense persistent pain. Among 61 patients, the Complete Response (CR) rate in the RT + WBH group showed a massive improvement over RT alone: 47.4% vs. 5.3% within 2 months post-treatment (P < 0.05). Notably, the time to complete pain relief was just 10 days for RT + WBH, while the endpoint was not even reached in the RT-only group.

Conclusions: WBH plus RT demonstrated significant increases in pain relief and a much shorter response time compared with RT alone.

QoL Indicator / Pain Improvement RT Monotherapy RT + Hyperthermia (WBH wIRA) Impact on QoL
Complete Response Rate (CR) at 2 months (zero pain score) 5.3 % 47.4 % ↑ 894% Increase in the chances of total pain elimination.
Time to Complete Pain Relief Not reached 10 Days “Significant and rapid” benefit.
Duration of Pain Relief Median: 28 days (4 weeks) Median: Not reached at 24 weeks Relief duration increases sixfold, reducing reliance on painkillers.

Compared with a similar Phase III study (Chi MS et al., 2017) using RF locoregional hyperthermia, the clinical benefits achieved with WBH wIRA were significantly superior. Results for RF HT + RT:

QoL Indicator / Pain Improvement RT Monotherapy RT + Hyperthermia (RF HT) Impact on QoL
Complete Response Rate (CR) at 3 months (zero pain score) 7.1 % 37.9 % ↑ 533% Increase in the chances of total pain relief.
Duration of Pain Relief Median: 55 days (7.9 weeks) Median: Not reached at 24 weeks Relief duration triples, reducing dependence on medication.

Other benefits and areas of application of Whole Body Hyperthermia include accelerated metabolism , stimulation of the hormonal system , reduction in muscle tone , enhanced nerve conduction, Systemic sclerosis, Depressive episode, Essential (primary) hypertension, Dorsalgia, Fibromyalgia, Ankylosing spondylitis
